She has been a donor literally since she was born. She has donated lots of blood, bone marrow and more and now she is being asked to donate a kidney; a really invasive surgery that she does not want to have done. However, Anna does not have a choice. She has always been forced into donating to her sister and now she is done. Anna hires a lawyer and sues her parents for medical emancipation. She doesn’t know what is in her future; she just knows that this is right. Sara Fitzgerald: Anna, Kate, and Jesse’s mother who would do anything to cure Kate of her rare form of leukemia. She gets pregnant again in order to give Kate a donor; she gives up her job as a lawyer and tries to fight the disease for her daughter. She thinks that Anna is just trying to get attention and that the whole lawsuit is just a big misunderstanding. Little does she know, Anna isn’t the only one who is tired of Kate getting all the attention. Brian Fitzgerald: The father of Kate, Anna and Jesse. He tries to be equal with his attention. He worries about his son who is constantly getting into trouble, and his two daughters. He thinks that if Anna doesn’t want to donate a kidney, then she shouldn’t have to. Finally, he worries about losing his daughter Kate. He loves her so much, but knows that at any time he might lose her. So while putting out fires at his job, he is also putting out fires at home. Jesse Fitzgerald: Kate and Anna’s brother who is always getting into trouble. Once Kate was diagnosed, he didn’t get any attention. No one even really cared about anything that he did. He does drugs and gets into other really bad things but his parents just gave up. They have to focus too much on Kate to worry about the trouble that he is getting into. He supports his sister in her decision and tries to be helpful to her. Kate Fitzgerald: Kate was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia when she was very young. At that time, she suffered a lot through the entire illness along with losing the friends that she made in the hospital. Her life is a roller coaster and she is just trying to sort it out. Campbell Alexander: The attorney that Anna hired to represent her. He is a hotshot lawyer with a lot going for him. He usually is very selfish but decides to take on Anna’s case even though she can’t afford to pay for his help. Even though he is really cool he has a secret. He has a service dog, but no one knows why. He gives everyone a different excuse and throughout the book we try to figure out what is really wrong. Julia Romano: The Guardian ad litem assigned to Anna’s case. She is there to help decide what she thinks is best for Anna. She also has a crazy lesbian sister and a past relationship with Campbell Alexander. It is really fun to read about their relationship.
Summary:

She isn’t allowed to go away to hockey camp in case Kate needs her. She stops being included in parties and sleepovers because she would be pulled away to the hospital. Finally, Anna decides that enough is enough. She doesn’t want to donate a kidney. She hires a lawyer and sues her parents for medical emancipation. While reading this book, you find out more about her relationship with her sister and how she came to this decision.
